NOBC Website Notification

6/9/2016

Patient Colleagues,

Recently we informed you that the NOBC website was down. We have learned that the problem stemmed from an unknown person or persons “hacking” the website. Our management team at Apex has worked diligently to resolve the problem. We are confident that no conference registration information, files, membership or financial data or information was obtained. In fact, because NOBC uses PayPal to process payments made by you for things like conference registrations, a hacker cannot obtain such information directly from the NOBC website. We apologize for any inconvenience or frustration caused by this temporary outage, including for your inability to register online for the Annual Meeting. The site has been restored and you should be now able to continue using the site and registering for the Annual Meeting. We very much appreciate your patience.

A few notes which might assuage your fears.

  • As I understand it, we moved the website to a different “server,” which along with other steps will improve our ability to protect the information.
  • We also have budgeted to have someone “keep an eye” on the website to add protection. [This is my Luddite language.]
  • As I understand it, the hacker(s) wanted credit card information, which they did not get. As far as we know, they didn’t get other information, or even TRY to do so.

It is our hope to remain vigilant and keep up with the technology and ahead of the hackers. But keep in mind that Mark Zuckerberg was hacked just last week, and that the NSA, NFL and the IRS have been hacked. The only thing we can do is stay awake, and we are doing everything we can to protect member information.

If you have any questions, please direct them to me. Though, in truth, it might be more efficient to direct them to Kelly Schild at Apex kschild@apexmanage.com and avoid the need for a consecutive translation.
