Appointment of a New NOBC ABA Delegate

August 23, 2018 7:55 AM | Anonymous

Dear NOBC Colleagues:

For those of you who have not already heard the news, John Berry, NOBC’s elected delegate to the ABA House of Delegates and an NOBC Board Member, has announced that his last NOBC meeting will be our upcoming Midyear Meeting in Las Vegas from January 23-26, 2019.  NOBC has been fortunate to have John in that role for 30 years!  Please join me in thanking John for his outstanding service.  John has worked tirelessly on behalf of NOBC by staying after each Annual and Midyear meeting to represent us at the ABA House of Delegates, and he has participated fully as a member of our NOBC Board for all those years.  What extreme dedication!

John’s term as our NOBC ABA Delegate does not conclude until the close of the NOBC Annual Meeting in San Francisco from August 7-10, 2019, and an election for the position will be held during that meeting.  However, there will be a vacancy during the middle of John’s term as delegate, and the NOBC Bylaws provide that the President shall make an appointment to fill that vacancy.  The NOBC ABA Delegate is a member of the NOBC Board of Directors.

Due to the unique position of NOBC’s ABA Delegate, I would like to start the process early to select a new delegate so that person can learn from John’s experience and wisdom over the coming months, and to familiarize that person with the work of the NOBC Board for as much of the 2018-2019 year as possible.  The new person would serve as a non-voting member as an Alternate NOBC ABA Delegate from the date of appointment through the conclusion of the ABA House of Delegate’s Midyear Meeting in 2019.  At that time, the new person will assume the voting position on the Board and have the full responsibilities of the ABA Delegate through the ABA House of Delegates Annual Meeting in 2019.  Ideally, the person appointed to this position would be able to start joining monthly NOBC Board conference calls as well as attend the Board meetings on October 18, 2018, in Chicago (in association with the ABA CPR Fall Leadership Conference), January 23, 2019, (in association with the NOBC Midyear Meeting in Las Vegas), and August 7, 2019, (in association with the NOBC Annual Meeting in San Francisco).  The person appointed must be able to attend the ABA House of Delegates sessions January 28, 2019, in Las Vegas and August 12-13, 2019, in San Francisco.

John has presented a program at both our last Midyear and Annual Meetings, “NOBC ABA Delegate 101:  All You Ever Wanted to Know About Its History, Details of Service and Future.”  (Materials may be found at: https://nobc.org/resources/Documents/Meeting%20Material/2018/Annual/Roundtable%20IV%20ABA%20Delegate.pdf)

If you are interested in being considered as a successor to John as NOBC’s ABA Delegate, please email me a letter of interest as well as a current C.V., resumé, or biographical statement by no later than Friday, September 6, 2018, to mbentley@mo-legal-ethics.org.

If you have any questions about this role, feel free to reach out to me or to John Berry, jberry@flabar.org

Thank you for your consideration.
